Vitamins for Tinnitus
The vitamins for tinnitus include niacin (vitamin B-3), Vitamin A, zinc and magnesium. Zinc and magnesium are technically minerals that our body needs. Some researchers recommend Vitamin B12 for tinnitus. You will read about these vitamins on this web page.
Tinnitus
Tinnitus is a hissing, or buzzing, or whistling noise you hear in your ear. There is no external source for the sound. It can occur in one ear or both ears. As a cancer survivor, you may have tinnitus as a result of chemotherapy. It is very common after treatment with cisplatin or carboplatin.
The platinum in those chemotherapy drugs is responsible for damage to the tiny hairs in your inner ear. The damage is permanent. There is current research using two drugs that may protect against tinnitus.
Vitamin A
A Swiss study reports that survivors of explosions were able to regain their hearing by taking a massive dose of vitamin A for a short period of time. For six weeks, people took 300,000 IU of vitamin A. Long term use of this vitamin can cause side effects such as liver damage. Pregnant women should never take more than 5,000 IU per day of vitamin A.
Vitamin B-3
Niacin supports circulation, healthy skin, and aids in keeping the nervous system working. There is no accepted standard dose of niacin for tinnitus. There is no clinical proof that it works. There are, however, anecdotal reports of response to niacin to treat tinnitus.
Vitamin B-12
One clinical study showed a high prevalence of vitamin B-12 deficiency in patients with chronic tinnitus. Supplemental B-12 provided tinnitus relief to some patients. Benefit reports from the Israeli Army tell of the value of B-12. The best way to absorb vitamin B-12 for tinnitus into your body is by injection.
Vitamin B-1
Thiamine as a supplement has provided relief to some patients with chronic tinnitus. The mechanism of action is through the stabilization of the nervous system. It is another one of the vitamins for tinnitus.
Folic Acid
Folate is a nutrient belonging to the B-complex family that seems to have a stabilizing effect on the nervous system. There is anecdotal evidence that folic acid supplements in some patients alleviate the tinnitus.
Supplements
The vitamin that is most recommended by people who have researched tinnitus cures is Vitamin B. Some researchers suggest that a deficiency of Vitamin B is what causes tinnitus! It would seem to me that taking a vitamin B complex supplement once a day might provide you with some relief from your tinnitus. Tell your doctor that you are taking it.
A multi-vitamin supplement may contain all of the B vitamins. Read the labels carefully. There is a case to be made for adding vitamins C and E to your daily intake. I would take either a B complex or a good multi-vitamin.
Zinc and magnesium are the two minerals most frequently mentioned with the treatment of tinnitus. By taking a good multi-vitamin tablet, you would be getting supplemental zinc and magnesium.
Conclusion
Unfortunately there are no clinical trials to support the theory that vitamins for tinnitus will relieve the symptoms. It is certainly worth trying either a B complex or a multi-vitamin tablet once a day.
You will soon be able to buy a homeopathic solution for tinnitus on this very web site. Ring Relief is a patent pending glycerin solution of seven active ingredients said to relieve tinnitus.
