treatments for colon cancer advanced stage II that would keep you in a hospital for 2 months

my boyfriend is 42 and was diagnosed with advanced stage 2 colon cancer at the end of June. He did nothing about it until the end of August, where he started on some sort of drug trial. He went into the hospital to run tests to see how the drugs were working, and the second time he went in was the very beginning of November. Its now the beginning of January and he was told the drugs weren't working and has not been allowed to leave the hospital. He said he's had some surgeries and going through treatment, but he won't tell me what it is because he doesn't like talking about it and says he doesn't want to worry me. (I'm out of the country until September, and extremely worried). What could these surgeries and treatments be? Could he be starting chemo? How long does it take for people to start losing their hair on chemo? I don't know if you may need this information, but the doctor that he has is in a different state than where he lives, so maybe that's why he has to stay in the hospital?
