Spasms after part of colon removed

by Carla
(South Africa)

My mom had part of her colon removed last year, A large part and farily low down, so part of rectum was removed as well but luckily only needed an ileostomy bag for a few months as it was reversable!
During the year they put her on chemo and radiation as they had found some Lymph cells were affected, so instead of doing the bag reversal after 6 weeks she had the bag up to 6 months later so they could get on with the chemotherapy.
During the chemo she incurred huge bowel spasms, to the point that she would be doubled up in pain for 8 or so days at a time, lost loads of weight and they kept lowering the chemo drug to try help.. unfortunately it didnt seem to. She was on a low fibre diet, but nothing helped and 3 months into treatment they had to stop as she had lost too much weight and was too weak to continue.

They monitored her instead and reversed her bag when she was stronger. The spasms still occured but infrequently for a day and usually when her diet was to rich in fibre.

3 months ago they saw her cancer count was higher than usual, and they scanned and found a growth on her liver. That was immediately removed and now she is back on the chemotherapy, low dose to start this time to see if she can manage it this time round and if perhaps having no bag will help to avoid spasms. We were all thinking perhaps the gut was still tender after the surgery and having the bag and perhaps the chemo aggrivated it, and now it has had time to heal and so different out come.
She managed 2 full months, and now into her third she is only just slightly over 50% of the chemo dose she should be on, the spasms start again.. No one seems to know why, its not a side effect of the chemo and I am struggling to find if people with similar stories have ever had spasms like this, from chemo/diet or other.. Her encologist seems to think she is just lacking the enzym to digest/break down the chemo..
She finds the spasms to be unbearable and it scares me so much that she will stop the treatment again if they continue, as she also cannot really eat and then gets weak and so on so its a vicious cycle..

Please if anyone has had similar experiences or knows of a helpful solution please tell me, I have been suggesting the docs give her some sort of med that just zonks her out for the few days a month she gets these spasms to help her continue with the treatment... I see when she is relaxed (like when I give her a massage) the spasms definitely seem to not be so bad... but who can massage for days on end?

Look forward to any help, or comments
Thanks so much

Rectal Spasms after surgery
by: Anonymous

I had Colon Cancer and it was stage 1 and it doesn't require chemo. I personally know how painful the espasms could be because prior to discovering the colon cancer, I lived with it every nite for months.

I cry myself to sleep for 30 mins every nite before I passed out. 4 months after the surgery, I was recovered fully but the spasms start. This time, it's not severe. It feels like the urge to go to the bathroom. During the day, after each fecal passage, the spasms start and last for 4 -5 hours. I can't sit still at work. I need to get up to move around to distract myself.

I tend to eat snack to comfort myself. It's not good. I went to see my GI doctor, he did a colonascope again, it's healthy and he has no explanation for the spasms.

Amazingly the spasms went away after that. Now, 8 months after surgery, the spasms come back again. I just started taking Pamine (anti-spasms) 2.5mg but I don't know if it will help. I don't like medicine and I havn't taken enough to see a dramatic result.

Pamine (non generic) is expensive, 90 tablet for $400. You take 3 tablets a day according to the instruction. I think swimming really helps me relax and I feel good after. During the weekends, I go walking and hiking (not sitting) and I don't feel spasms.
I take a lot of fiber in my diet, I may need to reduce my fiber intake as mentioned in the previous discussion. However, I diet consists of 95% of vegitables, very little meat, no starch either. What else can I eat without fiber?

Anal spasms
by: Jackie

Hello,
I have rectal cancer. I had chemo/radiation first. Then surgery to remove my colon and rectum and they put a "j Pouch" in with a temporary ileostomy for 6 mos. During healing for 6 mos from surgery, I am having a stronger chemo. I have horrid anal spasms. The surgeon thinks I'm crazy and thinks I just don't have any tolerance to pain. It's been 2 mos. since my surgery. These spasms are not associated with the surgical recovery I don't think and He doesn't think, but I don't know why I'm having them. The chemo. I'm on is Oxaliplatin (FOLFOX regimine) and Xeloda in pill form. The side effect info. does not show any rectal spasm side effect. Mine have been severe only twice so far, but I have constant pain and pressure down there. I have large extenal hemmroids which the Surgeon would not remove during the surgery, however he did remove internal ones. I too would like to find out why I continue to have this anal pain and spasms.

rectal spasms
by: Anonymous

I'm currently looking for info on colon/rectal spasms caused by chemo as well. Usually they start the third night after chemo starts - I'm up every 1/2 hour with painful spasms that feel like I need to have a bowel movement. This continues for two days and gradually tapers off. I'm going to ask the doctor if this is normal and if there is a drug that I can take to stop the spasms. Good luck ot your mother.
