Post Surgery Colon Cancer Histopathology Report

by Mariam
(Dubai)

My mother 62+ got operated for colon cancer on 5th Feb'2011 followed with biopsy done for right hemicolectomy and colonic cut margin.

Although the report states that the lymph nodes and bowel cut margin are free of tumour metastases. There is another statement that "Two out of 17 lymph nodes received, show non caseating granulomas". Can you tell me what this statement means, is this any thing to worry about, if so, what should i do next.

Granuloma is a medical term for a roughly spherical mass of immune cells that forms when the immune system attempts to wall off substances that it perceives as foreign but is unable to eliminate. Such substances include infectious organisms such as bacteria and fungi as well as other materials such as keratin and suture fragments.[1][2][3] A granuloma is therefore a special type of inflammation that can occur in a wide variety of diseases. The adjective granulomatous means characterized by granulomas.
