Post Sigmoid Colon Colon Cancer Bowel Function

I had an upper rectum lower anterior resection colon cancer surgery three weeks ago with chemo to start shortly. The adenocarcinoma was 4.6 x 2.3 x 1.9 cm. I'm wondering if I can expect normal bowel function to return, and if so, when. I frequently feel I need to make a bowel movement but oftentimes find that there is none or only a small stool, and yet when I finish I still feel I need I pass more stool. It is also tough to tell if I'm just needing to pass gas or if there is stool to pass as well. On occasion, I will have a more normal bowel movement. My surgeon said my colon needs to learn rectum function which I don't really understand. What do you think?
