Never Too Young

by Bonnie
(PA USA)

When I turned 50 yrs. old my regular doctor mentioned that I should have a colonoscopy done. I figured there was no rush - that colon cancer happens to much older people.

In the Fall of 2008, my 80 yr. old aunt died of colon cancer. They found cancer in other parts of her body.

In January 2009, I overheard my husband (who is 10 yrs. older than I am) scheduling a colonoscopy for himself and told him to make an appointment for me at the same time. That he did.

On the day of my colonoscopy, they found 5 polyps which were sent away to be checked. Three days later I got a phone call from the doctor. He told me they found early stage cancer in one of the polyps and pre-cancer in another one.

Two months later I had colon cancer surgery where they removed 18 inches of my colon along with the my appendix and ovaries.

Today I am cancer free and tell this story to let everyone know: never think that you are too young to have colon cancer and when a doctor mentions a colonoscopy - go have it done.

It is much better to have a colonoscopy than to have to go through colon cancer surgery. I thank God I am alive and that He allowed the colonoscopy to alert us as to what was going on inside my body.
