Mom scared for her son's colon cancer

Message: My son who is 44 was diagosed with colon cancer a few days before his 44th birthday in late May or June or 2011. They removed an 8 inch section of his colon, and he didn't have to have a bag.
The doctor checked several lymph nodes and said there was not cancer there, but he still wanted him to be on chemo 3 times a day, every two weeks, for 6 months. After 4 months of chemo, it was too much for my son. His pain (or he calls it twitching now) came back in his abdomen area. His original stage of cancer was Stage 2A. Now the oncologist has ordered a PET scan. Does this mean that he may have the cancer back?
I've heard that if colon cancer comes back, it comes back with a vengence. I'm waiting to hear the results of the PET scan now and I'm scared to death. Once a mother, always a mother, no matter how old the child is.
I'm totally out of control with my nerves, and crying and I'm sad, mad and just don't care about much of anything now. I don't want my son to die. Yet, I would hate for him to have to go through this wondering if it is going to come back every 4 months the rest of his life too. Obviously, the chemo did not help me.
We've heard that it won't either and that chemo is just a great money making treatment. A cure is more than likely out there, but cures don't bring in the money like the treatment costs do.
My question is what are the percentages of the chance that the colon cancer comes back. And, what is the normal life expectancy after that?
Is there anything they can do to get rid of this cancer in my son's body so thta he can live a normal life.... He has a 10 year old boy, who is going to have a very rough life, if his daddy dies. Not to say tht his mother is going to have a very good rest of her life either. I can't even feel happy now. It just feels wrong. How can I be happy about anything when my son is battling cancer?
I've heard about some hyperthermia type of treatment....heating up the body or certain area of the body, enough to kill the cancer cells. This is being done in Germany and seems to be successful in many cases the patient is cured in about 72 hours. Of course, they have to survive the temperatures of 105 degrees for that long, but they are closely monitored. Please, I hope you have some good news for me.
I lost a brother when he was 17 to cancer, and I've lost my mom to Alzheimer's and my dad to cancer as well. My one brother lost his daughter way too early too, she was only 31. I've seen what these people go through. I'm already going through the same signs just knowing of this possibility.
I'm hoping and praying for a cure. A final fix for my son, so that he can go on living at the very least, at least another 20 to 25 years. Help...
