Is this Colon Cancer or something else?

Hi, I would like to know what the early signs of colon cancer are. My son is 22 yrs old today and for the past 2 years or a little more has experiencing great difficulty with bowel movements.
He has not had a solid movement in a very long time. He gets lots of cramping, has loose runny jell like movements,(NEVER A SOLID) he has also expressed that he has noticed blood in his stool.
He has been to a dr.; he has had an ultra sound done, only thing that was found was bruising around the kidney area. He experiences a lot of abdominal pain quite frequently. He has problems with foods.
He was diagnosed as Lactose intolerant not too long ago (6 months ago) He was told by a colon cancer survivor a few things, and he feels he has experienced some of what he has been told. He has also told his Dr. but I don't know if it is because he can't understand but nothing more has been done.
What should his next step be? I am not familiar with this disease
please help!!!!!
