laparoscopic vs open surgery
by: DancingGrace

laparoscopic is much better than open surgery. The scar is not so ugly and less recovery time and 5 times less pain during recovery.

Open surgery or Laparoscopic?
by: ALBERT

Hi Hossein

First, if you are not sure of the usual way for the treatment, then you should assume that the doctor is telling you the best of what he knows.

Second, each case is different from other cases. Also each doctor has a different plan for attacking cancer and getting rid of it. Different plans do not mean one is better than the other. It’s like having two routes to go to work, both are of the same distance and both take the same time but for some reason you prefer one over the other. When I met with my doctor (The surgeon), I requested that we do some treatment to slow down the cancer until we do the operation. This treatment can be a combination of drugs, radiography, and chemotherapy. The doctor refused and said we would go straight to the operation. To be honest with you, I have wished he agreed to do the treatment while waiting for the operation day. So in your mother-in-law case, it is a good idea to do such treatment before the operation. You said all of you were worried that the stage would go from 2 to 3, (I hope you are not worried any more or not as much as before). Radiation and chemo treatment’s goal is to reduce the ability of cancer to advance and to make it weaker and smaller. So it should be a good thing for your mother-in-law case. I hope such treatment will not further delay the date of the operation.

I have a question for you. Is the operation going to be open surgery or laparoscopic?
I asked my doctor to do a laparoscopic surgery, but he said he prefers to do an open surgery instead. (Probably he does not do laparoscopic.) I didn’t want to waste time and go for another doctor. It could delay my surgery another month or two. I’m waiting for authorization to do the surgery, and then wait for the day of the surgery.

I searched the Internet for comparisons between open surgery and laparoscopic. And the summary of the search is laparoscopic is better, but there is not enough experienced doctors to do it. Even though laparoscopic started in US 20 years ago, as of today, only 3 percent of colon resection surgeries are laparoscopic.

I hope your mother-in-law will be cancer free after the surgery.

Changing from one stage to a higher stage
by: ALBERT

To Hossein

I asked that question to my doctor (colon resection surgeon). He said changing from one stage to a higher stage is slow because the spread is microscopic. So I think you shouldn’t worry about the operation being rescheduled for 2 months. I hope your mother-in-law will have a very successful operation and that she recovers from the operation very fast.
What you and your wife can do now is just make her happy and have people around her all the time. It is very hard to be alone and thinking about the operation for 2 moths. Try to keep her busy with things that she loves to do.
