General Surgeon vs. Specialist

We just found out that my dad may have rectal cancer. The general surgeon who performed the colonoscopy and found large polyps which he feels are for sure cancerous. Because there were so many polyps he suggested doing a resection regardless of the pathologists findings because if there isn't cancer now the likelihood that it will develop is extremely high due to the amount and size of the polyps. My question is should we go to a specialist for the resection and second opinion or is the general surgeon qualified for such a procedure? I feel like a specialist is the best option because that is all they deal with however my Dad is afraid to go to a specialist because he is afraid the we will have to wait too long to get in and the general surgeon is good. Any suggestions of advice is GREATLY appreciated!

Go to the specialist

I had a resection done due to colon cancer and the general surgeon didn't explain the options and performed a permanent colostomy.....also without telling me it would be permanent. When I demanded a reversal, he couldn't find the lower end and felt uncomfortable digging for it, so abandoned the attempt. So now I've gone to a specialist who says he can put me back together no problem. Should've gone to him in the first place. Likely would've been just one operation. Now it will be three.

Go to a specialist
They grow slow and you want the best
this is major surgery. I had a resection and know what I'm talking about.
