drinking wine after a colon surgery

My mom, 87 years old, had a surgery last year to remove a section of colon with a pre-cancerous polyp. Now she is having a small glass of red wine every night before bedtime. Is it ok?

Colorectal Cancer Survivor
by: Anonymous

It will be 3 years January 7, 2012 since I had radiation, chemo, surgery, an ileostomy, for 8 months with 4 months of chemo for colorectal cancer. I had the reversal a year after all this. I have kept a food diary, tried different foods and tried not having a glass of wine before dinner and with dinner. I did not notice any difference when I did not have wine. I guess I'm thinking that wine is one thing that I enjoy in the evening. I have the same bowel problems with or without it. Life is good even though a bathroom is my comfort zone. I do not take any medications.

Dr. told me no alcohol
by: Anonymous

Alcohol is not on the list of food and beverages that my Doctor allows me to have after my colon surgery. I cannot imagine drinking alcohol right now for the simple fact that I'm 90% sure it would be painful. The pain medicine that was prescribed to me is not supposed to be mixed with liquor.

I was instructed to consume a lot of water to help flush out toxins (the heavy medications I was on in the hospital) and to encourage bowel movements.

If you cannot convince your mother to stop drinking the wine, at least try to get her plenty of fluids during the day.

I don't know if it's good for her, but I hope she has two glasses of wine.
