Difficulty and coughing when swallowing after colon surgery

My grandfather had a colon sugery a month ago and since then he can hardly eat. He starts coughing and choking when he tries to swallow even soft foods and liquids. Also when he drinks, often the liquids go out of his nose.
Is it possible that colon surgery can cause such side effects?
