Diagnosis for colon cancer?

My father, who is 69, a heavy smoker, drinker, who does not exercise etc, had a colonoscopy yesterday, which they could not finish,as his body had not cleared out all of the matter, so they had to stop. What they found so far were several polyps, along with a 5cm polyp? or mass, with an identation,or dimple.

The doctor did not want to touch it at all, and now he will be meeting with the surgeon in a couple of days. I am very concerned and am trying not to worry, but from what I have read, none of these findings are positive. Has anyone else had a similar experience, and is it most likely cancer? He had gone to the ER a few months ago with several upper abdominal pain, but they thought perhaps it was a gall stone. Could this be related?
