Complications from bowel resection of stage 2 colon cancer

by maryann
(Hayward, CA)

My mother was diagnosed w/stage 2 colon cancer she under went surgery to remove all of her ascending colon and a resection was done (small intestines to her transverse colon), she was sent home 2 wks. later. After being home for a week she began to have serious pain in her abdomen & started vomiting, we rushed her back to the hospital and was told her resection was coming apart. I was horrified, she hadn't healed from the first surgery and now to learn she had to go through it again, my mom was 67 & until this had been in good health. I asked the doctor if they could do a colostomy since this would be less traumatic & then do the resection after she healed better, but was told that wasn't an option, she would need to have the resection done again now. My mom lived for 6 yrs. after this, but she was never the same. She suffered from anemia and ulcers & passed away of complications from bleeding ulcers. I've always felt this was all a result of her having under gone the 2 surgeries back to back and that she never really healed inside. My mom had stage 2 colon cancer she didn't need chemo or radiation and I can't help but think now if it could not have been treated w/medication's instead of the surgery in the first place. I wanted to get a second opinion, but she liked and trusted her doctors and wouldn't hear of it. I mean anemia, ulcers, stage 2 colon cancer these are all treatable conditions and people don't die from unless the ball was dropped somewhere. I'm not blaming anyone I just haven't been able to find answers.
