Colonoscopy: Do You HAVE To Lie On Your Left Side

by Pat
(Ontario)

I am scheduled for a colonoscopy in 3 weeks. Everything I have read indicates that you lie on your left side. I have severe arthritis in my left shoulder and cannot lie on that side due to pain. Can a colonoscopy be done with the patient lying on the right side?

Why do you have to lie on left side as opposed to right side or on back?

Technically, no. I did a rotation in endoscopy, and we had a patient with your problem, except her shoulder was dislocated. During the procedure you may be asked to move from your left side onto your back, or even onto your right side as the colonoscope goes around your bowel. So I'm sure if you discuss it with your endoscopist, they will accomodate you. I have seen colonoscopies done with the patient right- sided first- but bear in mind it hinders the advancement of the scope and may not be possible. You may just have 'one of those' colons.
