Colon resection but didn't get further treatment, now what?

by Vera
(Colville, WA)

I had colon cancer, l med. apple sized tumor, removed. No other polyps were cancerous but removed. No other cancer discovered.

I didn't feel I needed to continue with chemo or any other tests. Hope I didn't do the wrong thing by not continuing with something.

I didn't care for the surgeon. His manners and way of talking to me and my husband made us feel we didn't want further contact with him. My Dr. doesn't do surgery. He only refers patients to others. I will get a colonoscopy before the end of this yr. I'm so hoping I have no more enlarged polyps or any other visible problems.

What is the chances of my getting colon or any other cancer since I didn't have any other treatments Thank you, Vera

The choice is individual
by: Anonymous

My husband was diagnosed with colon cancer high risk stage IIB - Sep of 2009.

He was given the option to due Chemo and decided against it. We have him on a daily regiment of suppliments and he is eating a more healther diet, more with fruits and vegatables, fish etc.

It has been 24 months now since his colon surgery to remove part of his colon and the tumor. Latest scan he is still in remission or NED "No evidence of disease" and has been since his surgery.

Now will the cancer never come back? No one is to know if it does come back is it because he did not opt for the CHEMO or if it does not come back is it because of the suppliments? There is no correct answer.

He choose not to do Chemo becuase of various family members history of cancer and Chemo.

Mother breast cancer Stage III - 2 rounds of Chemo and that is all she could tolerate she said it almost killed her. Over 6 years for her and the cancer has not returned.

Sister-in-law (my sister) breast cancer Stage 4 Chemo - passed away approx 36 months after diagnosis. And my sister said when she was alive if she had to do it all over again she would not have taken the CHEMO route as quality of life is what would have been most important to her and she was not having any quality in her life. Her family wanted her to do CHEMO so that is why she did but she was horribly sick most of the time during the treatments which continued until her death.

Brother-in-law - Prostrat cancer - Stage II - Chemotherapy - passed away approx one year after diagnosis.

Sister Breat cancer Stage II - Opted out of CHEMO and is still alive after 30 years from Diagnosis.

Again there is no correct answer and the decision is totally up to you. If my husbands cancer returns at that time we can address if he wants to try the CHEMO treatments or not.

Best of luck to you.

Piece meal and chemo

My husband also said no to chemo. It can come back either way-- since chemo only cures 5 different types of cancer, and colon cancer is not one of them, it is used simply to feel they've done all they could.

Doctors, and especially specialists, need to realize that they cannot be a good physician if they do not treat their patients with respect. It helps if they're likable too!

There are many other things you can do to keep your colon cancer at bay. If it doesn't come back, they say it's because of the chemo. It's a scare tactic.

Do your research and not just what the pharmaceutical industry says. Overall, chemo only cures 2.1% of the time! If there were a herb out there that cured 2% of the people but killed 20%, do you think it'd be on the market?

We've been duped so that we will continue fundraising for them. Our culture now bows to bald heads-- we need to stand up and insist on answers-- like why is it that the real stats haven't changed in 50 years! If we find them earlier, it makes it look like they live longer--(especially breast cancer). There are a very few cancers that actually respond to these practices. We need to look outside the box and work harder at prevention-- not early diagnosis-- prevention!
