New Colon Cancer Drug
5 NEWEST EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENTS
New colon cancer drug treatments target Stage 2 and Stage 3 colon cancer and seek to keep your cancer from coming back. In addition to surgery, Stage 2 and Stage 3 colon cancer patients generally require more extensive resection of the colon.
Latest Treatments
The latest treatments are for patients whose colon cancers have spread beyond the colon to involve the lymph nodes and nearby organs. These cancer drugs are strong treatments that kill cancer cells that have escaped from the colon. The harshness of their side effects need to be discussed with your doctor before you decide which treatment is best for you.
The frequently used combinations include chemotherapy drugs such as 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin and oxaliplatin. Most recently, monoclonal antibodies have been added. They include:
- Erbitux® (cetuximab), an anti-EGFR (epidermal-growth factor receptor) and
- Avastin® (bevacizumab), an anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor)
The other new colon cancer drug treatments, following colon surgery, include:
- bevacizumab/Avastin® + Oxaliplatin/Eloxatin®
- Capecitabine/Xeloda® (alone)
- cetuximab/Erbitux®
- irinotecan/ Camptosar® (not for stage III)
- oral eflornithine (DFMO) + oral sulindac), and
- bevacizumab/Avastin® + irinotecan/Camptosar® + 5-fluorouracil + leucovorin
Each colon cancer treatment option was developed based on clinical treatments with the goal of reducing the recurrence of your cancer. Survivability in colon cancer stage 3 has been increased from 65% to 85%, when surgery is combined with chemotherapy. Studies have also found that adding radiation therapy has benefit for some stage 3 patients, increasing survivability from 35% to 65%. It is always necessary to stay vigilant for any abnormal signs and symptoms, indicating that your body may have a recurrence of colon cancer.
