Colon cancer and nutrition are important topics because this is one way to fight cancer that is easily within your control. Maintaining high quality nutrition should be an important part of your cancer treatment. Whether you are recovering from cancer or are in the middle of treatment it is important not to aggravate cancer by having a poor diet. Your diet can play an important role in strengthening you immune system.

How to put together the best dietary program for you

A colon cancer diet that would be most appropriate would consist of:

  • mostly whole grains
  • vegetables and
  • legumes

This would supply you with:

  • carbohydrates
  • protein and
  • vitamins.

You can improve your diet and prevent the recurrence of cancer. Treating colon cancer and nutrition awareness go hand-in-hand. The best way to do that is to introduce Super foods to your diet. These foods are known to reduce cancer cell growth dramatically.

The best vegetables that have cancer prevention compounds

Some examples are vegetables which are high in vitamins and carotenoids and cancer preventive compounds such as:

  • broccoli,
  • kale,
  • cauliflower and
  • winter squash.

Great sources of protein in vegetarian diets are from:

  • tofu,
  • soya and beans.

Beneficial healthy oils like Omega 3 fatty acids from:

  • fish,
  • canola oil and
  • flaxseed oil are a great addition to a preventative diet.

Cancer patients may also respond better to treatments if their diet is truly healthy. The risk of recurrence of primary cancer may also be reduced. Some of these guidelines may help you:

  • Eat a variety of foods. Foods naturally contain substances in them to protect you against certain diseases. The more variety you include in your diet, the less chance there is of attracting opportunistic diseases.
  • Limit your fat consumption. Choose low fat meats and dairy foods etc. It is better to steam, boil, bake or stir-fry food. Do not fry foods.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables. If you can, choose fresh organic fruit and vegetables as they have a higher nutrient value. Also eat more garlic.
  • Eat more high fiber foods such as whole grain breads, cereals and legumes.
  • Be careful of highly salted and smoked foods and meats.
  • Stop eating refined sugars, junk food and empty processed food.
  • Cut back on your alcohol consumption as you may be susceptible to certain types of cancer. Especially when combined with smoking.
  • Exercise regularly and control your weight by eating moderately.
"Maintaining high quality nutrition should be an important part of your cancer treatment."

Strengthening your immune system is the goal

You need to keep in mind that cancers are very opportunistic and they attack when your immune system is weak. So you main goal should be strengthening your immune system and creating an environment where cancer cells cannot grow. You are going to need to change your diet so as not to aggravate the cancer. Fortunately most cancers respond well to diet improvement. We will post other articles on colon cancer and nutrition on this web site and you can always write to us with any question.
