Can someone get Diverticulitis shortly after having surgery for colon cancer?

My mom is 82, and recently underwent surgery for colon cancer that turned out to be Stage 3. She came home (without any diet restrictions?) and now 4 weeks later is back in hospital for aggreviated diverticulitis ?
Can this happen so quickly? And when she started complaining 1-1/2 weeks after surgery, and blood count was elevated and showed infection, why was it still undetected by surgeon, oncologist and cardiologist, all of whom she saw until she was so weak we thought she was going to die any minute?
