After Cholostemy Reversal

by Diane
(NY)

My husband had rectal resection Oct 2010 and a cholostemy which was reversed July 25, 2011. Since then he has had very loose stool where even a slight seepage causes extreme pain from the acid. Stool has remained quite loose. Do you have any suggestions to firm up the stool? He is useing lomotil and fiber. He has developed raw sores in the rectal area (similar to diaper rash). Do you have any suggestions to relieve and repair this problem? He has used Desitin, Butt Paste, cocoa butter, various powders, Bag Balm. Your help will be appreciated.

How to thicken the stool
by: Anonymous

Hi Diane, Yes this may help....One teaspoon Metamucil fiber in two ounces of water. Allow the fiber powder to gel in the cup. Eat one teaspoon of the gel after each meal and do not drink any liquid for one hour. If the stool becomes too thick reduce dose to twice daily. This should thicken the stool. Use Lantiseptic ointment on the anal area daily as a skin barrier and to relieve irritation.Per MD Anderson Bowel training program..Houston Texas. Hope this helps.

by: Anonymous

Hi, I had the reversal Feb 2010 and had problems with loose stools and leakage so my Colon Nurse at the hospital suggested imodium which I take almost every day. It has helped but at least I feel I am in control of it.

Rectal cancer survivor 2009- 20011
by: Anonymous

I had this surgery two years ago December. Frequent potty trips is rather unavoidable for a period of time but the good news is things will improve over time. I was treated successfully at MD Anderson Houston Texas..stage two rectal cancer. Radiation chemo and two surgeries and I am now cancer free but still going through the side effects of the surgery and radiation. The B.R.A.T. diet will help along with Metamucil fiber one level teaspoon in two ounces of water after every meal. this will help to thicken the stool and result in less potty trips. (no liquid for at least one hour after each fiber dose) BRAT, stands for, bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. (white bread only)I was told I would need the fiber doses daily for the rest of my life but Probably adjust to a lower dose later on as time goes by.Bowel function may never be as good as it once was but it will improve allowing a more varied diet. Your husband will learn the do's and dont's when it comes to what he can eat and be comfortable with. I highly suggest keeping a food diary. Please feel free to contact me with any further questions. Blessings
