FARRAH FAWCETT'S BRAVE BATTLE AGAINST CANCER HELPS RAISE AWARENESS

We are all saddened by the news of Farrah Fawcett’s death. All the reports I’ve read praise her courage and dignity during her public battle with Anal Cancer. Her valor and grace can be a lesson for all of us. If we give up in our fight against cancer and begin feeling sorry for ourselves it will diminish the quality of our lives, and that is exactly what Fawcett refused to let happen to her. I will remember her legacy every time I start to feel overwhelmed by the bad breaks life throws at me. This week also brings us news about the status of Cancer Research in America, statistics concerning cancer rates in people under 50, a promising new method for cancer treatment and inspiring survivors who share their hard won wisdom.

EAT SMART AND PROTECT YOURSELF FROM COLON CANCER

According to Kelly Cornell we can improve out odds for avoiding Colon Cancer by planning our meals around vegetables, whole grain foods and legumes. Include more fiber in our diets, like fruits and nuts, they make great snacks. We should reduce the amount of red meat we eat because there’s a direct link between red meat and CC. Drinking a lot of alcoholic beverages also increases the risk of developing CC. Green Tea a good multi-vitamin and exercise also helps prevent many types of cancer, so include them in your daily routine. And remember, regular screenings because early detection is very important for successful treatment of Colon Cancer.

INCIDENTS OF COLON CANCER INCREASING IN THE YOUNG

There is a 17% increase in Colon Cancer in people under the age of 50 in the last 10 years, according to the June issue of Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention. The cause of the rising numbers is most likely due to the life style of younger people. They were raised on fast food, which means a diet of red meat and pop. Diets that include a lot of red and processed meat and not enough milk and calcium are linked to Colon Cancer. The lack of exercise and an increase of obesity have also been reported over the last decade, and these factors also lead to an increased risk of Colon Cancer. Jill U. Adams goes on to note that Colorectal Screenings are not typically done on people under 50, resulting in slow detection and treatment for this age group.

GRANTS AWARDED FOR CANCER RESEARCH FAVOR THE NON-RISK-TAKERS

Researchers who want to work on ground breaking studies are getting grants to finance their work, because the institutions that award them are cautious about where they spend their money. If the American Cancer Society awarded millions of dollars on a research project that failed to produce any major advances, they would have nothing to show for their investment. This unwillingness to take chances is why we haven’t seen any real advances made in the fight against cancer. Gina Kolata also reports that research is getting more expensive while grant money is shrinking. The directors of the institutions that make grants and the scientists agree that the current system is not working. A few institutions have set aside grant money for risky research, but only a few of the thousands of applicants will receive funding for their studies.

PERKIN, ILLINOIS HONORS LOCAL CANCER SURVIVORS

Rusty Dunn, the Mayor of Perkin, Illinois spoke love and toughness at a dinner for cancer survivors, as he honored their impressive success in fighting their disease. Pat Sheridan was one of the survivors, and she spoke about her victory over Colon Cancer. She was pregnant with her third child in 1966, when she found out she had Colon Cancer. Sheridan underwent surgeries to remove cancer from her colon and appendix, and delivered a healthy baby boy 6 months later. She and the other survivors talk about love and faith in their stories of fighting and winning their cancer. Dr. Gordy Klatt ran a twenty-four hour marathon to raise money for the local American Cancer Society. That was twenty-five years ago, and the marathon has grown into the “Relay for Life,” reports Valari Hyatt from the eleventh annual event.

A NEW METHOD FOR DELIVERING CANCER FIGHTING DRUGS

Nicholas Wade reports that Australian researchers have developed a minicell that delivers cancer fighting drugs and gene suppressing agents to malignant tumors. These minicells can be covered with antibodies that are attracted by the specific cancer cells being treated. Experiments with the minicells, done on mice with cancer, successfully delivered two separate toxins to fight the cancer. The first toxin caused the cancer cells to curb a gene that makes it resistant to chemotherapy. The second toxin delivered by the minicells is doxorubicin, which is used in chemotherapy. This advance in treatment needs more research before it will be known if it can work on cancer that has metastasized. Safety trials on patients will begin next month at three hospitals in Melbourne, Australia.
