WILL MY COLON CANCER RECUR AFTER TREATMENT?

Patients in treatment for the early stages of colon cancer can find out if their cancer will return after treatment with a new test that scans for mutations that occur in 12 genes that are produced by tumors in the colon. Charlene Laino reports that it will make it easier for doctors to decide if the patient need’s to have chemotherapy after they have surgery to remove the tumor. Patients with a low score have an 8% chance of the cancer returning. Patients scoring higher have a 25% chance of the cancer recurring. Surgery can cure 4 out of 5 patients, and the test will identify which patients will need to have chemotherapy after their surgery.

MEDICARE WON'T PAY FOR COLONOGRAPHY

“We have determined that there is insufficient evidence on the test characteristics and performance of screening CT colonography in Medicare-aged individuals, and that the evidence is not sufficient to conclude that screening CT colonography improves health benefits for asymptomatic, average-risk Medicare beneficiaries.” This breaking news sparked a debate among patients and doctors. Dr. J. Leonard Lichtenfeld believes the virtual colonoscopy help get more people to make appointments for screenings because it is a less invasive procedure than a colonoscopy. Dr. Abraham Dachman says Blue Cross and Blue Shield pay for colonographies.

Other medical experts point out that if something does show up on a colonography the patient would still need to have a colonoscopy, and those patients would end up having 2 tests.
